We’re Going to Make a Great Team.
Blue Crow Author Services (BCAS) provides professional, high-quality services to all authors, whatever their final publishing goals may be. We assist authors at all stages of their publishing careers.
We help authors who seek to be published by large houses and small presses, who seek to publish independently, and who may never seek to publish at all.
Note: If you have previously submitted your book to Blue Crow Books and your book was not accepted for publication, we are happy to refer you to one of our excellent colleagues who provides author services. See the FAQs below for more information.
We assist in all of the phases of the publishing process.
We can help you with any of the challenges you face while writing and publishing your book.
✹ Manuscript: We can coach you as you write your manuscript. If you have a finished manuscript, we do manuscript assessments, developmental editing, copyediting, line editing, and proofing.
✹ Submitting your book: We can help with agents, publishers, query letters, synopses, and book proposals.
✹ Cover Design: We do professional cover design, for both ebook and print. We have a professional graphic designer in house who has 20 years of experience.
✹ Interior Production: We do interior book layout for ebook and print.
✹ Distribution: We can help you as an independent author with all of the steps required to distribute your book, including acquiring ISBNs for your title, writing back cover copy for your book cover and for Ingram/Amazon/other distribution channels, acquiring endorsements for your cover and distribution channels, acquiring a Library of Congress number, choosing the best distribution channels, setting pricing, and more.
✹ Marketing: We can help you with the various pre-publication marketing strategies that all authors—independent and traditionally published—need to consider, including creating promotional items (e.g. bookmarks, magnets, tote bags), submitting to contests, submitting to trade reviews best suited to your book, creating a press release, connecting with book bloggers and bookstagrammers, creating or boosting a social media presence, creating or updating a website. We can also help independent authors navigate the various online advertising tools available to them.
Q. What are “author services”?
A. Author services refers to freelance professional assistance to help you bring your book to print.
Q. Are you a hybrid publisher?
A. No. Hybrid publishers, also known as “vanity presses,” require authors to pay money in order to publish their books. Often, with hybrid publishers, authors sign a book contract, hand over some or all of the rights to their books, pay the costs of publishing and marketing their book, and then earn some royalties from sales.
Q. How is Blue Crow Books related to BCAS?
A. Blue Crow Books is a traditional publisher. BCAS is author services. The two do not mix. In fact, authors who make use of BCAS may not later submit their books for consideration by Blue Crow Books. And, no author who has submitted their book for consideration by Blue Crow Books may hire BCAS. If you have submitted your book to Blue Crow Books and need author services, we have many colleagues to whom we may refer you.
Q. What types of editing do you do? What do they all mean?
A. We do developmental editing, line editing, copyediting, and proofing, and any combination of those four that you might need. If you aren’t sure what these terms mean, or what kind of editing you need, take a look at this website, which does a good job explaining. If you still aren’t sure what you need, don’t worry! We can help you figure it out. Email us and say you need our help. We’ll likely ask you some questions, and probably for a sample of your work.
Q. I want my edits done fast. Why do I have to pay a rush fee?
A. Like most workers, we schedule our work in advance. Right now, as you’re reading this, we’re working on author services projects for clients. In fact, we have projects scheduled out weeks into the future. Fortunately, we have a great team of editors here at Blue Crow Author Services, so someone is always available to help you with your project in a timely fashion. However: If you need your project done very quickly, we can do that, but it means that we have to work longer hours to get your project finished, either because you have a big project that will take working long hours to finish, or because we have to work on your project at the same time as our other work, essentially working overtime. Think of the rush fee as overtime pay.
Q. Why is your minimum rate $150?
A. We form a relationship with every client we work with. Whether you’re writing a long book or a short story, there’s a baseline amount of service that we provide to you: we help you figure out what services you need, how fast you need those services, which person on our team is the best person to help you, and more. These baseline services take time, which we must charge for.
