About Blue Crow Publishing

Blue Crow Publishing, LLC, is an independent publisher of fiction and nonfiction founded in 2016. We publish fiction of a variety of genres under our Blue Crow Books imprint, and nonfiction, including memoir and social commentary, under our Raven Books imprint. Our Young Adult imprint is Goldenjay Books, and Little Crows, our children’s book imprint, will launch soon.

We published our first books in 2017. We publish approximately ten books a year. You can learn about the kind of books we publish by reading our Submission page. We are a socially conscious press that prioritizes own voices and traditionally marginalized authors.

Blue Crow Publishing Statement of Beliefs

We at Blue Crow Publishing operate according to five guiding principles. These five principles, or beliefs, inform our decisions every day.

  • We believe that authors should be treated with honesty and respect.
  • We believe books should be beautiful and of high quality.
  • We believe that the best books are sometimes overlooked by publishers.
  • We believe that great writing is not limited by genre.
  • We believe that all authors deserve a voice, especially those whose writing the publishing world has so often turned its back on.

Blue Crow Publishing FAQs

Here are common questions that people ask about Blue Crow Publishing and other small presses.

Do you charge authors money, say, a reading fee, or a fee for publication?

Don’t be silly. No. We don’t charge any fees at all.

What is your royalty split with authors?

As a rule, we split all royalties with authors 50/50. (Although your contract with us has the final say on that.)

Wow, that’s so high! Why do you give authors such a big royalty cut?

We are a small outfit. We will do everything we can to put out a gorgeous book and to market it well with the resources we have. But our resources are limited. So we consider you, the author, a 50/50 partner in this publishing endeavor, and we need your help to make your book a success.

Do you consider books that were previously published?

Sure we do. Books that you self-published, or that you published with a publisher that went out of business, or that you published with a publisher and to which you now you have your rights back—we’ll consider them all. Just query us through the regular process and mention the previous publication. (Previous publication won’t hurt your chances—it just lets us know why there’s a book out there with the same title and content.)
